Howe of fife

A Virtual Tour of Rotary Clubs

In 2003 the Rotary Club of Howe of Fife in Scotland started a virtual tour of Rotary clubs around the world, by reviewing the website of a club and then presenting about that club at one of its meetings.

Each year since then James Storrar, a member off their club and coordinator of the project, has sent Christmas greetings to all of the visited clubs.

As you can see from the list at the bottom of their e-mail greetings, our club was one of the first clubs that they visited.

Dear Rotary Friends,

Another year passes ever more quickly and I'm delighted to send you greetings from our President Graeme and my fellow members of the Rotary Club of the Howe of Fife.
We wish you individually and your clubs well for 2009.

The uncertain times faced by almost all countries, none more so than here in the UK, is a worrying prospect for us all, not least due to the speed with which the turnaround has taken place. Ever the optimist, perhaps ultimately some good will come out of the reversal of fortunes with a reassessment of what is important to us; what in our lives has real and lasting value; what are our priorities; what do we need, rather than what do we want.

My Rotary involvement over the years with its stress upon service before self has always helped to keep "my feet firmly on the ground" and appreciate the strength and value of group effort; the value of and satisfaction in a good deed done. We all have that knowledge and experience from Rotary to meet the changed times ahead.

It has been a busy year for the Howe of Fife Club, in the main because for the first time we provided our Rotary District with the District Governor, David Rankin. We have been involved quite extensively in supporting his activities as well as continuing all our usual projects. Our website is functioning more smoothly now and details of our activities can be found there-http://www.rotaryhoweoffife.org

As for the World Tour we have been visiting (for us) very exotic places in the "Far East" travelling through Western Russia, Japan into China. The visits continue to be fascinating giving us an insight into how Rotary operates in these countries and into the country themselves. The more we travel we realise how alike we all are! Thank you all again for being so welcoming and helpful in so many ways. For the future we intend to continue south towards Australia.

Again our website shows the history of the tour http://www.rotaryhoweoffife.org/content.asp?ArticleCode=193&par=141

I mention again that the Rotary World Convention in 2009 will be held in Birmingham, England. Though over 300 miles to the south of us perhaps if you are making this trip you might enjoy adding a day on for a visit to Scotland at the same time! At least the £ exchange rate is likely to be well in your favour.

The other attraction for visitors to Scotland in 2009, especially those who may have some Scottish ancestry is that the whole year is to be devoted toward giving a warm "welcome home" to all the Scots who may have settled around the world. There are a series of events beginning with the 250th anniversary celebrations in January of our national poet, Robert Burns' death and concluding with our Patron Saint, St Andrew's Day Celebrations at the end of November. The whole programme of events can be found at - http://www.homecomingscotland2009.com/default.html

We wish you well for 2009.

Kind regards to all,

James Storrar

PS I've added a summary of the clubs we have visited- does your club website address remain as detailed?
Perhaps you may prefer also that I use a general contact email address for your club if there is such an address?
